The combined Water and Wetness product is a thematic product showing the occurrence of water and wet surfaces over the period from 2009 to 2015. In addition, this layer is also based on radar information (Sentinel-1 data) with a geometric resolution of 10m on a pan-European basis. A multitude of optical and SAR imagery is used, covering a prolonged time series of 7 years, which aim at capturing the intra-annual dynamics as much as possible within a given area and lead to one image composite per season (each season covered by 3 months) and year during the observation period. Built-up areas are characterized by the substitution of the original (semi-) natural land cover or water surface with an artificial, often impervious cover. These artificial surfaces are usually maintained over long periods of time. The imperviousness HRL captures the spatial distribution of artificially sealed areas, including the level of sealing of the soil per area unit. The level of sealed soil (imperviousness degree 1-100%) is produced using a semi-automated classification, based on calibrated NDVI. The local component focuses on different hotspots, i.e. areas that are prone to specific environmental challenges and problems. It will be based on very high resolution imagery (2,5 x 2,5 m pixels) in combination with other available datasets (high and medium resolution images) over the pan-European area. The three local components are: Urban Atlas. EU regional policy justifies the production and maintenance of detailed land cover and land use information over major EU city areas. The Urban Atlas provides pan-European comparable land use and land cover data covering a number of Functional Urban Areas (FUA). In 2012, an additional layer (Street Tree Layer - STL) was produced for a selection of FUAs. Riparian Zones. The next local component addresses land cover and land use in areas along rivers, i.e. the riparian zones. The rationale for this local component is provided by the need to monitor biodiversity at European level, amongst other in the framework of improving the green and blue infrastructures in the European Union. Natura 2000. The Natura 2000 (N2K) areas are also important hotspots for consideration. The aim of the first N2K project has been to map LC/LU in a selection of grassland rich sites and to assess whether those selected sites are being effectively preserved as well as, if a decline of certain grassland habitat types is being halted. The Riparian Zones products will support the objectives of several European legal acts and policy initiatives, such as the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020, the Habitats and Birds Directives and the Water Framework Directive. Land Cover/Land Use (LC/LU) classification is tailored to the needs of biodiversity monitoring in a tailored buffer zone along large and medium-sized European rivers (with Strahler levels 3-8 derived from EU-Hydro). LC/LU is extracted from VHR satellite data and other available data in a buffer zone of selected rivers. The classes follow the pre-defined nomenclature on the basis of MAES typology of ecosystems (Level 1 to Level 4) and Corine Land Cover, providing 80 distinct thematic classes with a Minimum Mapping Unit (MMU) of 0.5 ha and a Minimum Mapping Width (MMW) of 10 m. The production of the Riparian Zones products was coordinated by the European Environment Agency in the frame of the EU Copernicus programme. It stretches across all 28 EU countries, both on land and at sea. The aim of the network is to ensure the long-term survival of Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats that are listed under the Birds Directive and the Habitats Directive. Previously, in 2015 a selection of N2K grassland-rich sites (chosen from within five grassland habitats types, namely, 6210, 6240, 6250, 6510 and 6520) and covering approx. 160.000 km2 was mapped, including a 2km buffer to allow for an analysis of pressures and threats. The mapping product offered a detailed LC/LU product applying a hierarchical nomenclature with 62 classes. The selected sites were mapped for both the 2006 and 2012 reference years. In 2017, to allow for a harmonisation of the nomenclatures applied to the different local component products (Riparian Zones, N2K and the future Coastal Zone product), a revision of the nomenclature was undertaken which resulted in a reduction of classes. The N2K status layer now differentiates 55 thematic LC/LU classes. Due to the revision of the nomenclature the original dataset had to be re-coded (the old dataset is discontinued) and the new dataset, with an increased area, offers currently a LC/LU product covering approximately 300.000 km2. The mapping exercise will continue until middle 2019 when a final dataset covering approximately 630.000 km2 will be made available. An extension to other habitat types is also foreseen and is currently under discussion.
